Seven Injured In Somerville, MA Rollover Accident

As reported by the Somerville Patch, two cars collided yesterday afternoon on Mystic Valley Parkway at the intersection of Route 16 and Boston Avenue in Somerville, Massachusetts during rush hour traffic.  The impact in the two car collision caused an SUV to rollover.  Seven people were taken to nearby hospitals for injuries sustained in this car accident.  Fire Departments from Somerville and Medford responded to the scene along with local police and the Massachusetts State Police.  Sections of Route 16 were shut down while emergency responders transported the injured and cleared the vehicles from the roadway.

According to the NHTSA:

  • SUV’s, pick-up trucks and vans are more susceptible to rollovers because they are taller, narrower and have a higher center of gravity.
  • 40% of fatal rollover accidents involve excessive speed.
  • 85% of rollover accidents involve single vehicle crashes.
  • 35% of deaths from passenger vehicle accidents in 2010 were caused by rollovers.
